Overall, the key style and style of the whole horn is more similar to the Conns from 1915 than from the New Wonder Conns of 1925. The Holton left hand pinkie arrangement is different from Conn. Bell size (5") and shape of the Holton and Conn Wonder is the same as is the bore where the throat fits and where the mouthpiece fits on. The semi-circular key guard around the rear F#key appears to be identical to the same piece of hardware on the 1914 Conn Wonder sax.

The shapes of the left hand palm keys are like the Conn Wonder from 1914, not like those on the New Wonder Conns. The engraving is very similar, as are the brace shapes. I think they are contemporaries of my Holton trumpet. The earliest Holton instruments were built in Chicago, and both of these are Elkhorn marked. The bottom RH palm A# key has been reshaped so that it is behind the other two - out of alignment and higher, nowhere close to aligning with the stop post, and one of the left hand palm keys has also be reshaped. The silver plated one has a couple of former user "customizations" to two keys that are interesting. One difference worth noting is that the register key is placed differently on the curved neck piece. I also noted that the Holton is very similar in proportion to the Conn Wonder of 1914. Keywork is similar on both saxophones - butterfly B,Bb, different function right hand spatula G# trill (I realize that the Conn Wonder has an alt right hand key that trills G# when the left pinkie G#is active), and the other RH spatula upper register F#? key that I will not know what it does until I get these playable. #17685 raw brass, engraved bell, soldered straight tone holes, dimpled pearl buttons and rollers.Įngraving on both is consistent with the style of an early 20's Frank Holton trumpet I have.

#15861 silver plate overall, satin body, burnished engraving and keys, soldered straight tone holes, dimpled pearl buttons and rollers - possibly a few original pads which were thin, soft white leather - not bulky pads.
